Tracking Covid-19 Trends is Purely an Extracurricular Exercise for Dr. José Tamez-Peña

QNotes, Vol. 9, Issue 3

José Tamez-Peña, PhD, Qmetrics’ Chief Technology Officer and the Professor of Biomedicine at Instituto Technologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), Monterrey, Mexico, keeps quite busy with both of these roles. That has not deterred him from voluntarily taking on a new project to forecast the spread and trends of Covid-19

“I wanted to know what to expect from this pandemic, and to share this information with others who are interested,” commented Dr. Tamez-Peña. “I could not find forecast data of Covid-19, especially when it will be hitting hardest.” He takes data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at John Hopkins University and the open data from the Directorate-General for Epidemiology in Mexico.

From the data he observes, Dr. Tamez-Peña tracks deaths from Covid-19 worldwide and develops models predicting fatality trends. He shares his findings on RPubs and Twitter. His predictions are not official, nor are they backed by any organization or government. He advises readers to take predictions with caution.

Dr. Tamez-Peña is committed to this project for his personal interest, not to enforce or endorse any policy. “I plan to continue this project until Covid-19 is gone for good.”
